Demographic Evolution
Between 1986 and 2001, the population of Cowansville grew from 11,643 to 12,032. Between 1986 and 1991, the population had increased by 2.9% with a slight -0.2% decrease between 1996 and 2001. Over the entire period (1996-2001) the population variance in Quebec was 1.4%.
Youth
Between 1996 and 2001 the percentage of young people aged 0 to 19 years decreased slightly going from 26.3% of the total population in 1996 to 25 % in 2001. On the other hand the percentage of seniors (65 years of age and over) increased slightly during the same period, going from 14% in 1996 to 15.1% in 2001. The percentage of adults (20 to 64 years of age) remained virtually the same.
The City of Cowansville has an aging population. While one quarter of its’ population is under 20 years of age, (the provincial average is 24%) if current tendencies were to continue, the percentage of young people in Cowansville as in the province as a whole would continue to decrease.
The proportion of men and women is roughly equal
6,055 women and 5,975 men resided in Cowansville in 2001. The aging factor may well accentuate this variance (80 persons) during the coming years because the life expectancy of women is higher than that of men.
Families
Between 1996 and 2001, the number of families, has increased by 5.5%, growing from 3,080 to 3,250. The number of households rose to 4,800 in 2001, an increase of 3.6% over 1996 (4,720).
Single Parent Families
As of 2001 there were 590 single parent families, in Cowansville. This constitutes 18.2% of the total number of families. This figures is on the increase since 1996 (16,8%).
The size of Families
In 2001, there were, on average, 2.9 persons in two-parent families and 2.7 persons in single parent families. These percentages differ from those observed in 1996. Indeed, at that time two-parent families counted 3.1 persons in the family unit in 1996, which represents a decrease of 6,5%.
Francophone majority
In 2001, 83,9 % of the population of Cowansville used French as its main spoken language. The percentage of English used as the main spoken language decreased by 24,1 % between 1996 et 2001. The proportion taken up by other linguistic groups remain relatively small (0.8 %).
Revenues
Average personal incomes increased by 20.8 % between 1996 and 2001, going from $20,951 to $25,313.
This average is however lower than the provincial average that rose to $29,385 in 2001. During the same period the average income of women grew more rapidly than that of men. However the difference in income between men and women favoured men by $9,338.
